An Answer to the Severall Petitions of Late Exhibited to the High...

In Support of Tithes [Great Britain]. An Answer to the Severall Petitions of Late Exhibited to the High Court of Parliament, And to His Excellency the Lord Generall Cromwell, By the Poor Husband-Men, Farmers, And Tenants in Severall Counties of England, For the Taking Away of Tithes, Paid to Priests and Impropriators. London: Printed for J.M. and J.A., 1652. [ii], 25, [1] pp. Quarto (7-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in later quarter sheep over plain boards, black-stamped title and date to spine. Light rubbing and soiling to extremities, corners bumped, later armorial bookplate (of Albert Fairfax, 12th Lord Fairfax) to front pastedown, rust marks to hinges, blank leaves added before and after text block by binder. Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing and soiling, brief early annotation (shelfmark?) to title page. $550. * Second edition. As part of a series of reforms, Cromwell and his allies proposed the abolition of tithes on the grounds that they disproportionately burdened the poor, professionalized the clergy and were a vestige of popery. Our pamphlet is a historical overview of tithes written in support of the existing system. The first edition appeared the same year. OCLC locates 1 copy of the second edition in a North American law library (Harvard). English Short-Title Catalogue R277.
