London: Butterworths, 1856. xxvi, 770; 22, [2] pp. Main text followed by 24 pp. publisher catalogue, additional publisher lists to endleaves. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary pebbled cloth, blind frames to boards, blind fillets and paper title label to spine, untrimmed edges, several signatures unopened. Light rubbing, light soiling and faint staining to boards and spine, front hinge partially cracked, spine ends and corners bumped, a few cracks to text block, Signature II (pp.481-496) partially detached but secure. Moderate toning to text, light soiling to margins in a few places, (illegible) early owner signature to head of title page. $650. * First edition. Written by a barrister of Lincoln's Inn, this was one of the pre-eminent 19th century treatises on the law of mortgage. Holdsworth held it is high regard and discusses it at length. Still in print as Fisher and Lightwood's Law of Mortgage, it reached a 15th edition in 2019. The first edition is uncommon.
