An Interesting Collection of Ephemera from Eighteenth and Nineteenth-Century London [Scrapbook]. [Gosling, Sir Francis (1719-1768)]. [Receipts and Documents Related to the Gosling Family]. [London], 1706-1875. [51] ff. Small folio (10-1/2" x 8-1/4"). Later (twentieth-century?) three-quarter sheep over pebbled cloth, 14-1/2" x 17-1/4" (unfolded, 5" x 6-1/4" folded) indenture with wax seal and stamps laid-in. Light rubbing to boards, which are detached, residue from removed label to front board, moderate rubbing and light wear to extremities, backstrip lacking, corners bumped and worn, light soiling, fold lines and a few small holes to indenture, no loss to text. Receipts, handbills and other documents affixed to rectos and some versos of 30 leaves. $950. * Likely compiled by a descendant, this scrapbook is primarily comprised of receipts and documents relating to Sir Francis Gosling and his family. The son of legal bookseller Robert Gosling, he was a partner in Goslings Bank (later Goslings and Sharpe) and an alderman of the City of London. He served as sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1758. The receipts deal with a wide range of matters relevant to the daily life of a man of Gosling's stature. They include purchases from lamp lighters, shoemakers and apothecaries, rent payments to the Lord Mayor of London, and several receipts that indicate collection of land taxes and annuities, possibly by Gosling. One receipt appears to be in Devanagari script, suggesting commerce with colonial India. The laid-in indenture names Gosling and John Pyle executors of the estate of John Walsh, and the scrapbook concludes with several documents relating to Walsh and Pyle. An interesting collection of ephemera that provides a look into the daily life and responsibilities of a civic leader.
