With Interesting Laid-In Material Douglas, William O. North from Malaya. Adventure on Five Fronts. Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1953. Photo illustrations. 352 pp. Original green cloth, very good in edgeworn and lightly faded dust jacket with a few small tears, maps on front and rear endpapers, owner bookplate ("James P. Ince"?) to verso of front free endpaper, moderate toning and minor light foxing to a few leaves. Additional carbon-copy typescript material laid-in. $150. * First edition. Douglas, a prolific travel writer in addition to his legal work, was one of few Americans to travel extensively in the Middle East and Asia in the mid-twentieth century. In North from Malaya, he discusses Southeast Asia as "a battlefield of Russian Communism and democratic ideals" and provides an account of his visit to five "crucial fronts": Malaya, the Philippines, Indo-China, Burma and Formosa. Laid-in to our copy are a corrected press release from North from Malaya and a carbon-copy typescript that appears to be an excerpt of an essay discussing communism in Burma and its relationship with China. The latter document, possibly written by Douglas, has both typed and autograph corrections and additions. We cannot trace the source of the document.
