Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, blind fillets to calf edges, raised bands, blind and gilt decoration and gilt title to spine, colored endpapers. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front joint cracked, rear joint starting at foot, chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early armorial bookplate (of William Marshall), later bookplate of Anne and Ferdinand Gabriel Renier and small bookseller ticket to front pastedown, illegible recent ink annotation to rear pastedown, ownership signatures of William Marshall and Fred. E. Marshall dated 1815 and 1848 to front endleaf, owner initials "FEM" and small pencil question mark to title page. Speech misbound before final leaf of Speeches and Compositions. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing and soiling to a few leaves, early annotation to p. 77. $250. * Second edition; only edition. A leading Anglo-Irish barrister, Phillips was renowned for his oratorical skill and expertise with adultery cases. Speeches and Compositions collects four courtroom speeches, four speeches on Ireland and Catholic emancipation, and Phillips's famous "Character of Napoleon Bonaparte," a satirical elegy for Napoleon. The second work is a speech given by Phillips at a dinner held in his honor. Fernand Gabriel and Anne Renier were important collectors of popular printed material.
