One of the great English jurists of the seventeenth century, Hale was chief baron of the Exchequer from 1660 to 1666, when he became chief justice of the King's Bench. He was also a deeply religious man who published several devotional works. Addressed to England's lawyers and judges, and legalistic in tone, the Judgment contains three discourses on "The Use of Religion," "The Principle of Religion" and "What the Christian Religion Is." All are strongly critical of dissent from the Church of England, points echoed in the appended works by Bacon and Barrow. English Short-Title Catalogue R11139.
