Inscribed by Holmes Holmes, Oliver Wendell, Jr. [1841-1935]. Speeches. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1891. [v], 55 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/2"). Original paper-covered boards, title in frame to front board, deckle edges. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with light wear to corners, calf bookplate of Alfred Sutro to front pastedown, "L. Sanderson/ from O.W. Holmes" to front free endpaper. Light toning to interior, offsetting from bookplate to front free endpaper, touching lower half of Holmes's inscription. $1,250. * Third issue, which contains content not in the first two editions (1891, 1895). The inscription reads: "L. Sanderson/ from O.W. Holmes." These "chance utterances of faith and doubt" were offered by Holmes to "a few friends who will care to keep them." It includes several of Holmes's memorable addresses, such as his 1886 lecture at Harvard on "The Profession of Law," his 1895 Memorial Day address at Harvard, "A Soldier's Faith," as well as speeches on John Marshall and "The Puritan." We could not determine the identity of L. Sanderson. Alfred Sutro [1869-1945] was a notable San Francisco lawyer and bibliophile.
