In 1813 Hargrave's library, which included 499 manuscripts, most of them dealing with law, was purchased for ?8,000 in 1813 by the House of Commons and deposited in the British Museum. An important legal author and editor, Hargrave was one of the lawyers who represented James Somersett in the landmark case that determined the rights of enslaved people in England.
