Extensive early manuscript annotations to the first eight leaves, in places slightly shaved at the fore-edge. $2,500. * A rare and visually engaging early sixteenth-century Leipzig edition of Giovanni d'Andrea's celebrated arbores, the canonical diagrams by which the degrees of consanguinity and affinity were calculated and enforced. These schematic "trees," here rendered in bold woodcut (two full-page), formed one of the essential instruments of medieval jurisprudence, underpinning the regulation of marriage, inheritance, legitimacy, and the complex impediments arising from both blood and spiritual kinship. Giovanni d'Andrea, pre-eminent among the canonists of Bologna, stands at the head of the great commentators whose works shaped the practical administration of ecclesiastical law throughout Europe. His writings, disseminated widely in manuscript and eagerly taken up by the earliest presses, remained authoritative well into the early modern period. The present edition, augmented with commentary attributed to Henricus Greve and issued by the Leip.
