A Lethal Barroom Brawl in Pennsylvania [Manuscript]. [Pennsylvania]. [Witness Testimony in Commonwealth v. Hartman et al.]. Berks County, Pennsylvania, August 20, 1874. [30] ff. 12-1/2" x 7-3/4" ruled sheets held together with brass tabs at top-edge, text in single neat hand to rectos. Light toning, slight creasing near top-edge, occasional faint dampstaining to bottom-edge of first twelve leaves, light foxing, soiling and edgewear to first and final leaves, lower left corner of first two leaves lacking, text not affected. $750. * Hartman and his fellow defendants were accused of the beating murder of Martin Liederer on December 26, 1873. This document records testimony given during the August 1874 trial by 17 witnesses for the prosecution and 22 for the defense, including medical evidence and eyewitness accounts. The testimony is notably detailed, with key phrases underlined, and may have been prepared as part of an official record of the case. Hartman, the principal defendant, is probably Valentine R. Hartman [1839-1907].
