Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in later quarter calf over paper-covered boards, gilt title to spine. Light soiling to boards, light fading to edges of boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, joints starting at ends, spine ends abraded, small tear near head of spine, shelf label to its foot. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing to a few leaves, ink library stamps to title page and ink and pencil annotations (shelf-marks) to its verso, small clean tears to fore-edge of final leaf. $450. * Only edition. Hayes accused Carter of adultery with his wife while Hayes was a prisoner of war in Spain. Given that the wife conceived and bore a child in Hayes's absence, the jury found Carter guilty and awarded ?400 in damages. This account is rare.
