The Talbot divorce case centered around whether Mary Ann Talbot had committed adultery with a coachman employed by her husband, John Talbot, or whether, as her supporters claimed, her husband had arranged for her to be assaulted by the coachman so that he could divorce her for adultery. John Talbot won a criminal conversation suit against the coachman, while Mary Ann was committed to an insane asylum after the attack. Talbot was ultimately granted a parliamentary divorce after a high-profile case in the ecclesiastical courts, which became a flashpoint for debates around the impact of the divorce laws on women and the incarceration of women in insane asylums. John Paget, a Middle Temple barrister, was a relative of Mary Anne who paid for her defense and wrote several pamphlets on her behalf.
