[Heineccius, Johann Gottlieb (1681-1741)]. Vocabularium Juris Utriusque ex Variis Ante Editis, Praesertim ex Alexand. Scoti, Jo. Kahl, Barn. Brissonnii, et Jo. Gottl. Heineccii Accessionibus; Opera et Studio. [Paris]: Ex Officina Bousquetiana, 1759. 3 volumes. [iv], xxviii, 542; [iv], 568; [ii], 566 pp. Volumes I and II have copperplate pictorial frontispieces, that of Volume I mis-bound after title page. Octavo (7-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary flexible vellum with ties, early hand-lettered titles and traces of later paper shelf labels to spines. Negligible soiling, spine ends and corners bumped and lightly worn, faint dampstaining to edges of text blocks, vellum just beginning to crack through pastedowns, two ties worn away at ends, a few partial cracks to text blocks. Moderate toning to interiors, faint dampstaining in places, mostly confined to margins, spark burns and spots to a few leaves, repairs to front free endpaper and final leaf of Volume I, chip to fore-edge margin of frontispiece of Volume II. An appealing set. $1,250. * First edition. As Vicat explains in his preface, he compiled this dictionary from those of Francois Hotoman, Barnabe Brisson, Johannes Calvinus (Kahl) and, especially, Alexander Scot to bring their "excellent" work to a wider audience. More important, by combining these works and filling the gaps with original entries he was able to create a dictionary that covered the whole language of the law. Vicat's definitions are brief, but they contain comprehensive reference to authorities and texts, as well as conjugations, common phrases using the words, metaphors, alternate definitions and antonyms. Vicat was a jurist and the director of the University of Lausanne's library from 1749 to 1762. A pioneer in library science, he was the first to issue a printed catalogue. British Museum Catalogue (Compact Edition) 26:118.
