Widely considered to be the founder of German legal science, Carpzov did much to systematize German law, and his work did much to secure a wide recognition of German law and custom. First published in 1635, his magisterial treatise on Saxon criminal law was the first systematic study of its kind. It discusses major crimes, including murder, counterfeiting, blasphemy, perjury and witchcraft, lesser crimes, such as robbery, and the criminal process, including procedure and torture. It had a profound influence on the development of criminal law in the Holy Roman Empire and went through numerous editions into the late eighteenth century.
