Publisher's green cloth, black-stamped ornament and author name to front board, gilt fillets and title to spine. Light rubbing to extremities, spine ends and corners bumped, binding slightly cocked. Light toning to interior, light foxing to first few leaves, cracks in text block between pp. 64-65 and 216-217, all leaves secure. Gift inscription "For Mr. C.S. Darrow, with Beatrice Harraden's greetings. July 1900" to half-title. $950. * Later edition. In addition to her work as a novelist, Beatrice Harraden was an influential feminist and a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She was a founding member of the Women's Social and Political Union; other founders and influential members included Emmeline Pankhurst and Flora Drummond. Ships That Pass in the Night (1st ed. 1893), her best-selling work, is a love story set in a tuberculosis sanatorium. At the time when Harraden inscribed this copy, Darrow, who was well-known as a labor lawyer and progressive.
