Their efforts to apply Roman law to the jurisprudence of their day also prepared the way for the natural law school of the seventeenth century and helped to lay the foundations of the modern state. The greatest member of this group was Bartolo of Sassoferrato. Better known as Bartolus, he was a practicing lawyer and professor at the University of Perugia. His unrivalled reputation derives from his enormous literary output. In addition to the commentaries on the Corpus Juris Civilis for which he is best known, he wrote a number of treatises on law and politics.
