Recent three-quarter calf over pebbled cloth boards, raised bands, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine, edges rouged, endleaves renewed. Moderate rubbing to extremities, spine varnished, front joint starting, corners lightly bumped and worn, hinges cracked, library bookplate to front pastedown, faint offsetting to endleaves and first and final leaves of text block. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing, small faint stains and tiny spark burns to a few leaves, small tears to top-edge of last two leaves not affecting text, lower corner of Littleton frontispiece leaf lacking not affecting image, later owner signature (James Ramie, Denham) to verso of Coke frontispiece, early owner signature (John Chessbred?) to title page and early annotation to p. 53. $450. * Second edition. Coke on Littleton, or First Institutes, is one of the cornerstones of the common law and a primary legal text for generations. Several abridgements of this work were produced. Davenport's Synopsis is one of the best. First published in 1651 as An Abridgement of Lord Coke's Commentary on Littleton, its final edition, the third, was published in 1685.
