Chicago businessman Paul Darrow [1883-1956] was the only child of famed American attorney Clarence Darrow [1857-1938] and his first wife Jessie [1957-1953]. Four years after his birth, the family moved from Ohio to Chicago where Paul would spend most of his childhood and adult life; he lived with his mother after his parents' divorce in 1897. This book was given to him as a present from his father, possibly when he was about fifteen. The bookplate, designed to resemble his father's, likely pre-dates the ink stamp.
