Notarized Copy of an Agreement to Sell a Law Library, Charleston 1873.
A South Carolina Lawyer Agrees to Sell His Extensive Library [Manuscript]. Whaley, William [1817-1879]. [Notarized Copy of an Agreement to Sell a Law Library]. Charleston, SC, November 21, 1873. 2 ff. 10" x 8" ruled bifolium, text to rectos, embossed notary stamp to foot of second leaf. Light toning, horizontal fold lines, faint dampstaining, recent ink annotation to verso of final leaf. $350. * This document sets out an agreement between William Whaley and William S. Hastie of Charleston, South Carolina. Whaley, a partner in the local law firm Whaley & Mitchell, agreed to sell "all my Library of Law Books as it now stands in my present office...containing about two thousand volumes" for the sum of two thousand dollars to be paid by Hastie. Though the document mentions a "schedule" of the volumes "attached or to be attached," such a schedule is not present in this copy, which is "a true copy of the original" as certified by the notary. Whaley & Mitchell was dissolved in July of 1874. The document appears to have been notarized by Hastie's son, William S. Hastie, Jr.
