"John Wright Boott, a prominent businessman in Lowell, Massachusetts, committed suicide. At the inquest, John Amory Lowell, Boott's friend and legal counsel, testified that Boott had been depressed over charges... that [he] had mismanaged [his father's] estate. Brooks took umbrage at Lowell's claim, and contended in court and in print that Boott had been insane. In the lengthy and complicated legal proceedings that followed, Lowell defended the claims of some of Boott's heirs against Brooks and his wife" (Cohen, internal citations omitted).
