Mr. Justice Holmes is Frankfurter's finest statement of his admiration. This and other books did much to establish Holmes's posthumous reputation. Arthur Meier Schlesinger [1888-1965] was a prominent American historian who taught at Harvard from 1924 to 1954. He would later serve as a special assistant to President Kennedy from 1961-1963. Elizabeth Bancroft Schlesinger [1886-1977], his wife, was a notable feminist and one of the first scholars of women's history. They were part of Frankfurter's social circle at Harvard, along with such faculty luminaries as Josef Schumpeter and Alfred North Whitehead.
