More broadly, it reflects the power struggle between two houses during the seventeenth century that resulted in the dominance of the House of Commons. Holles, an English statesman and writer, had a long and varied career that spanned the Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration periods. He is best known as one of the "Five Members" whose attempted unconstitutional arrest by King Charles I in the House of Commons of England in 1642 sparked the Civil War.
