Contemporary sheep, blind frames to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, blind tooling to board edges, endleaves derived from printer waste (extra index leaves for this title). Light rubbing and a few minor stains to boards, front board partially detached but secure, rear board beginning to separate, moderate rubbing to extremities, light wear to spine ends and corners. Moderate toning to interior, light foxing in a few places, faint dampstaining to upper-outside corners of index leaves and publisher catalogue, light soiling and early paper repair to title page. $1,500. * First edition. This is both the first legal work bearing Story's name and the first American book of entries of precedents. It had a second edition in 1829. According to Marvin, the work's "notes and references show that the author had made no ordinary attainments in the science of special pleading."
