Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine, blind tooling to board edges. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards, somewhat heavier rubbing to extremities, a few faint creases to spine, corners bumped, front hinge starting, faint bleed-through to front pastedown. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, early owner signature, "S.H. Gardner," to front free endpaper. A handsome copy in a remarkably well preserved binding. $250. * Later American edition, based on the fifth London edition (1818). First published in London in 1799 as A Treatise on the Law of Bills of Exchange, this became the standard treatise in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century. The first American edition was published in 1803; the twelfth in 1854. In 1847 Marvin summed up a general opinion when he said it was "a comprehensive collection and analysis of Statutes and Decisions [not] equaled in the variety and extent of its learning by any similar production in our own or in any language." A search of Newspapers.com locates several c.1858 advertisements and references for an S.H. Gardner who was a lawyer in St. Louis. He was probably a former owner of our copy.
