In the book, the U.S. Supreme Court Justice provides his observations on the Soviet people and the effects of socialism and a totalitarian regime on their society. Rather than sticking to typical tourist routes, Douglas deliberately ventured into less-traveled areas, including mountains and villages. He recounts his travels on foot, by horseback, or by jeep, often camping in or near villages and staying up late to talk with the local people. His journey took him from the Caspian region (Pahlevi and Baku) through Soviet Asia (including the Turkmen, Uzbek, Tadzhik, Kirgiz, and Kazakh SSRs) before culminating in Moscow.
