Introductory and Concluding Remarks, Upon the Trial and Execution...

A Bibliographic Unicum: The Unrecorded "Appendix" to the Trial of Thomas Clarke Walker, George, Publisher. [Clarke, Thomas (d.1831)]. Introductory and Concluding Remarks, Upon the Trial and Execution of Thomas Clarke, For the Wilful Murder of Mary Ann Westhorpe, At Hallgarth Mill, Near Durham, On Sunday, The 8th of August, 1830. With Engravings. Durham: Printed and sold by George Walker, 1831. [ii], 5, [2], 44-57, [1] pp. Portrait frontispiece of Thomas Clarke. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in original printed wrappers, publisher's advertisements to rear wrapper, edges untrimmed. Light toning, light soiling to exterior. A well-preserved copy of a rare item. $850. * A remarkable discovery in the field of 19th-century British 'gallows literature.' This pamphlet appears to be an unrecorded work or a suppressed appendix to Walker's Trial and Execution of Thomas Clarke. While the standard 42-page account is well-known to bibliographers, the present copy contains an entirely unrecorded 18-page appendix (pp. 44-57). This section provides a searing religious critique of the crime, specifically condemning the murder as a violation of the Sabbath and expressing Victorian horror at the 'inappropriate' number of women in the execution crowd. The irregular pagination suggests this was either a planned expansion that was never widely distributed or a separately issued 'moral guide' intended for a more pious audience. This title appears to be unrecorded. No copies located on OCLC, Library Hub or the online catalogues of Harvard or the Library of Congress. OCLC locates 3 copies of Trial and Execution (Yale Law School, Durham University, Oxford).
