A crucial event in the history of Jamaica and colonialism, the rebellion was brutally suppressed, the colony placed under martial law and the supposed leaders executed after dubious legal proceedings. These events provoked fierce debate in Great Britain and inspired Finlason's treatise. A remarkable piece of scholarship, it probes legal aspects of the rebellion in its 72-page introduction, then continues with a historically grounded commentary on martial law.
