It was owned by Dr. Eli Allen Wood (1836-1894), was eminent physician, surgeon, state senator, prolific medical writer, sometime President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, as well as author of libretti for contemporary opera, who in 1871 inscribed this copy no doubt while living in Birmingham, Pennsylvania; and the attorney Nicholas Goshorn Ayres (1848-1918), who inscribed the half-title in 1902. All three lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so there is much geographical cohesion to the provenance as well.
