A well-preserved item. $950. * Dating from the Consulate era of the First Republic in France, this broadside lists criminals condemned to death at a tribunal for the Charente-Inferieure region. Most of the text is dedicated to the life and crimes of Charles Sauliere. After a fifteen-day trial, Sauliere and three accomplices were convicted of the murder the innkeeper Jean Garlopeau and his wife. (Three others were acquitted.) The broadside describes his conduct and provides a brief biographical sketch, followed by a trio of ballads on themes of punishment and repentance. This broadside is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies located by OCLC. Not at the Bibliotheque nationale de France or the University of California-Berkeley, which hold similar Revolutionary-era broadsides from Charente-Inferieure.
