Marvin praised this treatise for its "thorough, comprehensive and learned discussion of the Law of Uses and Trusts." It was a popular and durable work that went through several English and American editions into the 1840s. Sanders was an English barrister and a member of the Royal Commission on Real Property Law. The Thomas Mumford who inscribed this copy is the notorious county sheriff and predatory land speculator Thomas Mumford (1770-1831) of Cayuga, New York. He graduated from Yale in 1790, and studied under Judge Samuel Jones (Litchfield Historical Society website). Mumford is the target of one of several case studies of late eighteenth-century corruption in Scott W. Anderson's recent book, Pricing the Land: The Buying and Selling of Frontier New York and the Cayuga Reservation (Cornell UP, 2024). Mumford's signature is distinctively flourished, and several of his letters are held by the Rochester Institute of Technology, and are available for viewing on their website. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 628. English Short-Title Catalogue N7639.
