The compilation includes the Mississippi state constitution as ratified in 1832 and a detailed table of contents and index. The volume contains laws that address various aspects of the institution of slavery within the state. There are a number of acts specifically dealing with "free negroes and mulattoes," which generally imposed restrictions on their rights and activities in the antebellum South. The inclusion of the 1832 Mississippi Constitution is significant as it shaped the legal framework of the state during that era, notably stating that "The legislature shall have no power to pass laws for the emancipation of slaves without the consent of their owners". The legislature passed resolutions asserting the doctrine of states' rights, which was a major political stance at the time in the context of growing sectional tensions over slavery. These acts provide a primary source record of the legal mechanisms used to maintain the system of slavery and white supremacy in a Southern state just two decades before the American Civil War. Babbitt, Hand-List of Legislative Sessions and Session Laws 266.
