An Unrecorded English Broadside Reporting the Execution of Louis XVI [Broadside]. [Execution]. Louis XVI [1754-1793], King of France. Trial, Defence, Sentence, and Massacre of the King of France, Containing an Authentic Narrative of Every Interesting and Important Circumstance, As Communicated by a Member of the Late National Assembly to a Member of the British Parliament. Bath: Printed and Sold by W. Gye, Stationer, Market-Place; To be Had of All the Booksellers; And of Champante & Co. Stationers, London, [1793]. 23-1/4" x 19-1/4" (59 x 49 cm) broadside on laid paper (with indistinct watermark), text in four columns below headline, 5-1/2" x 6" woodcut execution scene at head of middle columns, text surrounded by thin-thick ruled border. Moderate toning and edgewear, some inkspots and light foxing, horizontal and vertical fold lines, a few with minor tears, calligraphic doodle in young contemporary hand to bottom margin, similar calligraphic doodles, cursive exercises, faint dampstains, inkspots and large inkstain, all without bleed-through, to verso. $3,500. * A warning to opponents of the British monarchy, this broadside sympathetic to Louis XVI appeared as news of his execution began to arrive in England. Its contents are adapted from a contemporary pamphlet, titled (in part): The Trial at Large of Louis XVI (...) Communicated in a Series of Letters by a Member of the Late National Assembly, To a Member of the British Parliament (London, 1793). The final column of the broadside is the text of the king's will. It is rare and appears to be unrecorded. No copies listed on OCLC or Library Hub.
