United States v John Bowman: Indct. for Murder Cost Bill for Atty General. [Chillicothe, OH, 1801]. 16-1/2" x 5" (42 x 12.5 cm) sheet, text to recto in two hands with autograph signature of Return J. Meigs, Jr. at foot, split neatly into two pieces along horizontal fold line. Moderate toning, tear to bottom-edge with minor loss to struck-through text. $200. * Bowman was indicted for the murder of John Betz (or Bates) during a bar brawl. After he was found guilty, his counsel requested a second trial, which resulted in a conviction of manslaughter. The case was heard before Joseph Gilman and Return J. Meigs, Jr., Federal judges of the Northwest Territory. Meigs, who signed our document, went on to a prestigious legal and political career as the first chief justice of Ohio's Supreme Court and the state's fourth governor. In all, Bowman's court battles cost the government $23.97; drawing up the bill cost 75 cents.
