After he was found guilty, his counsel requested a second trial, which resulted in a conviction of manslaughter. The case was heard before Joseph Gilman and Return J. Meigs, Jr., Federal judges of the Northwest Territory. Meigs, who signed our document, went on to a prestigious legal and political career as the first chief justice of Ohio's Supreme Court and the state's fourth governor. In all, Bowman's court battles cost the government $23.97; drawing up the bill cost 75 cents.
