Fritz, Christian G. Griffith, Michael Hunter, J[anet] M (editors). A Judicial Odyssey: Federal Court in Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties. San Jose: Advisory Committee--San Jose Federal Court, 1985. xv, 333 pp., illustrations. Softbound, very good. $20. * The editors have contributed to the mounting evidence about the West's legal history through a highly readable collection of essays on the history of the United States District Court in San Jose, California. The federal court there first opened its doors in 1852, only to close two years later, when Congress, under pressure from the rival legal community in San Francisco, abolished it. Another federal court did not open in San Jose for more than a century (1967), and then only after more than two decades of intense lobbying following World War II. Western Historical Quarterly, Vol. 17, No. 3 (Jul., 1986), pp. 363-364.
