Moderate toning, fold lines, light fading, attractively matted and glazed with copperplate portrait of Story in a 15-1/2" x 20-1/2" (40 x 56.7 cm) frame (matted display size of note 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" / 13.5 x 19 cm). Items not examined out of frame. $1,250. * In this brief note, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story writes to request payment on a check at Eagle Bank in Boston. He also promises to answer a previous inquiry from the recipient, Richard Smith, a bank cashier, as soon as possible. Joseph Story served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1811 until his death in 1845. He is widely considered one of the most influential legal scholars in American history, authoring Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), which was published just one year prior to this correspondence. Documents from his hand, even routine financial notes, remain highly sought after by collectors of legal Americana.
