Octavo (6-3/4" x 4-3/4"; 17.1 x 12.1 cm). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt spines with raised bands and lettering pieces, marbled edges and endpapers. Light rubbing and a few minor scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, light chipping to spine head of Volume III, most hinges cracked or starting, crack in text block of Volume IV between pp. 128-129. Light toning to interior, underlining and tick marks in pencil to a few passages in Volume I, owner inscription, of John Knowles, "Middle Temple," Volume I dated December 3, 1887, Volume II dated February 27, 1888 and Volumes III and IV dated April 3 and April 18, 1888, to front endleaf of each volume. A very good set. $450. * Third edition. This classic study, which went through several editions, is an incomparable storehouse of legal history and anecdote. As Atlay notes: "If [Campbell's] jocosity is not always seasonable, or in taste, it seldom fails to amuse."
