"Escaped from the Small Pox Detention Camp" [Broadside]. [Criminals]. [Mississippi]. $150 Reward. Escaped from the Small Pox Detention Camp, At Jackson, Mississippi, On the Night of March the 20th, 1913.... Jackson, MS, 1913. 9-1/2" x 8" (24.13 x 20.32 cm) broadside, text below headline. Light browning, inkstamps of San Francisco Police Department, dated March 27, 1913, and three marks in blue pencil. A well-preserved item. $350. * Signed in type by E.S. Middleton, Sheriff of Hinds County, Mississippi (i.e. Ellis Scattergood Middleton, Jr. [1863-1931]). The escaped men, both white, are Lowrey Chandler, charged with murder, and Paul Gilmore, charged with horse stealing. (The rewards are $100.00 for Chandler and $50.00 for Gilmore.) The description notes: "These men were suffering from an attack of small pox and their faces were still scabby when they made their escape." The San Francisco Police Department stamps show that Middleton cast a wide net for these men.
