The introductory materials by Lucas and Mignet provide context for the French reader. They are interesting documents of the reception of these highly influential codes in France. The Louisiana code and its related documents reprint the translations produced by Livingston for the then-bilingual state legislature. The (uncredited) translation of the United States Code is original. It is the first French translation of this work.
