Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards, red and black lettering pieces to spine, blind tooling to board edges. Light rubbing to boards, early owner signature, "Jas. R. Tyler," to front board, spine significantly darkened and gatored, moderate rubbing and light wear to board edges, faint offsetting and light foxing to endleaves, rear joint cracked. Very light toning to interior, occasional light foxing, small creases to page edges in a few places. A good copy. $450. * Seventh American edition, from the eighth London edition, to which it is star-paged. First published in 1802, this was the first English treatise devoted exclusively to the law of shipping. In 1847 Marvin said it was "a legal classic of high character" that was "frequently cited upon questions of commercial law not altered by statute." Story's valuable notes, many of them short essays, were originally published in the fourth edition.
