Mangum, Charles S[taples], [1902-1980]. The Legal Status of the Tenant Farmer in the Southeast. Chapel Hill, [N.C.]: University of North Carolina Press, [1952]. viii, 478 pp. Publisher's red cloth with gilt stamped spine. Worn and soiled with staining to rear board. Signatures of author and previous owner "Louis Graves" and property stamp to front free endpaper. Internally clean. A good copy. $30. * The property stamp reads "the library of / susan graham barnes" (all in lower-case letters), almost certainly indicating the ownership of the prominent American lawyer and judge the Honorable Susan Graham Barnes (born 1937) of Denver, Colorado. The book is considered a foundational work, providing a comprehensive collection of legal materials and case law related to the specific laws and conditions of Southern agriculture during that period. "With the completion of The Legal Status of the Negro, the next step in correlating the legal and social fields seemed to be the examination of farm tenancy law" (Preface, [vii]).
