Edinburgh: The Edinburgh Publishing Company/ London: Simpkin, Marshall, & Co., 1879. 269 pp. Two-page lithograph frontispiece, 2 pp. etching of trial scene, 2 pp. lithograph of the 8 defendants, 3 full-page etchings of 3 defendants, 3 pp. of (non-publisher) advertisements. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-3/4"; 17.80 x 12.5 cm). Stab-stitched pamphlet in pictorial wrappers bound into later three-quarter calf over marbled boards, blind fillets to boards, raised bands, lettering piece, gilt fillets and gilt date stamp to spine, non-publisher advertisements to rear wrapper and verso of front wrapper. Light rubbing and some minor scuffs nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, gilt morocco armorial bookplate of Edward Hailstone to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, offsetting from bookplate to front free endpaper, crack in text block between front free endpaper and front wrapper, negligible loss to text at foot of second two-page due to trimming. A very good copy. $250. * Second and final edition, one of two issues. This trial followed the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank, one of the greatest commercial scandals in Scotland's history. The directors were all convicted of fraud-related offenses and given sentences of eight to eighteen months. The two second editions, both published in 1879, have identical editorial content. The other issue does not have advertisements; its pagination is 272 pp. (The Edinburgh Publishing Company also published another illustrated report of this trial by Charles Tennant Couper.) Edward Hailstone [1818-1890], a Yorkshire solicitor, was a notable book collector. His vast collection included a large collection of manuscripts and books related to Yorkshire. He donated his Yorkshire collection to the dean's library, York Minster in his will. The rest of his collection was sold in two multi-day sales by Sotheby's.
