Contemporary three-quarter pebbled calf over marbled boards, gilt fillets and title to spine. A very good volume. $750. * The Avery case stands as one of the most sensational and culturally significant American murder trials of the nineteenth century. The Reverend Ephraim K. Avery, a Methodist minister, was accused of murdering factory worker Sarah Maria Cornell after discovering she was pregnant with his child. Avery allegedly strangled Cornell before staging the scene as a suicide by hanging her from a barn rafter. The trial pitted anti-Masonic and anti-clerical sentiments against a defensive Methodist church, capturing the absolute fascination of the American.
