Written during a period when Story was a U.S. Supreme Court justice and a professor at Harvard Law School, Story's treatises on commercial law were instrumental in shifting the framework of American law to a national, pro-business model. His treatise on partnership was his final work. First published in 1841, its final edition, the fifth, was published in 1859. It was a standard text in the United States and, to some extent, Great Britain during the nineteenth century. Warren, a contemporary critic, said it is "a truly luminous exposition."
