Rhetoric and the Origins of Medieval Drama.

Enders, Jody. Rhetoric and the Origins of Medieval Drama. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, [1992]. First edition. xiv, 281 pp. Publisher's grey cloth fine, in fine dust jacket. Internally clean and bright. $35. * This book argues that the foundations of medieval theater are not solely found in religious liturgy, but are deeply rooted in the traditions of forensic (legal) rhetoric. It challenges the traditional "liturgical" origin theory, suggesting that legal rituals and the oratorical practices of the courtroom provided a critical framework for theatrical representation. Mimetic forensic rhetoric, the performance based art of legal persuasion, is identified as a primary link between classical antiquity and medieval theatrical practices.
