Bryan died five days later on July 26, 1925. Bryan never actually delivered this speech in court. After his famous cross-examination by Clarence Darrow, the defense waived their right to a closing argument, which procedurally prevented the prosecution (and Bryan) from giving theirs. Supporters published his speech, which was a a fervent defense of the Tennessee anti-evolution law, shortly after his death to ensure his final message reached the public.
