Using contemporary newspaper accounts, court records and personal diaries, the author traces the origins of the violence back to a religious-political feud from County Tipperary, Ireland, which followed Irish immigrants. It then details the actions of a "Peace Society" or vigilance committee that carried out the massacre and the subsequent trials where no one was convicted despite eyewitness testimony.
