Contemporary sprinkled sheep, spine featuring raised bands, gilt ornaments, and a leather lettering piece; edges speckled. Shallow scuffs and negligible worming to boards; moderate rubbing to extremities, with a small chip to the head of the spine, bumped corners, and wear to the upper outside corner of the front board. Interior displays light toning, somewhat heavier in places. Early owner signature, "D'Astugueau" (or D'Astugue), followed by "Avt" (Avocat) and a purchase price (3 Livres Tournois) to the foot of the first title page. His neat, miniscule hand has added extensive underlining and annotations-many quite lengthy-to roughly 75% of both titles. $1,500. * Second editions. This copy is distinguished by an extraordinary amount of scholarly marginalia by a contemporary lawyer, likely the avocat "D'Astugueau." His notes provide a fascinating window into how provincial jurists engaged with royal legislation and competing legal commentaries in real-time, frequently contrasting theoretical law with local case law (jurisprudence). Boutaric on Donations: This text received the lion's share of the annotator's focus. On page 100, a remarkably dense note cross-references Boutaric's commentary with those of rival jurists Jean-Baptiste Furgole and Astruc. On page 105, in a passage regarding real property rents, the annotator injects highly precise references to the works of Claude Henrys concerning the Custom of Paris.
