Born and raised in Chillicothe, King served as a lawyer, president of the University of Cincinnati, dean of the Cincinnati Law School, and author of a History of Ohio. He was also the grandson and namesake of American founding father and New York statesman Rufus King (1755-1827). This copy possesses significant association interest, having belonged to notable New York surrogate judge Robert Ludlow Fowler (1849-1936), whose bookplate graces the front pastedown. Fowler was deeply tied to Cincinnati elite through his 1876 marriage to Julia Groesbeck, daughter of William S. Groesbeck, the famed counsel who successfully defended President Andrew Johnson during his 1868 impeachment trial.
