A Nineteenth-Century Lawyer's Library: 32 Items

May 25, 2021

The books in this list are from the office library of a small-town lawyer, A.H. Ware, who practiced in North Anson, Maine, during the second half of the nineteenth century. They may have comprised his entire library. Most of them have a label from a single bookseller in Portland. The rest bear the signature of an older Maine lawyer, James T. Leavitt. We assume Ware acquired those books from him directly, or through gift or sale after Leavitt's death.
